RWE Renewables has begun construction on its first green hydrogen project in Chile, which will increase electrolysis capacity by around 835 MW. The project, known as Vientos Magallanicos or the Winds of Magallanes, will also incorporate 1 GW capacity wind farms to provide power for the electrolysis process. The facility will produce 475,000 tonnes of ammonia for export each year.
RWE developed a prototype pre-feasibility study in 2021 in order to comprehend the entire value chain of such projects in the Magallanes region. The development of the Vientos Magallanicos project is still in its early stages.
RWE expects that the project will begin operations after 2030.
