Smith College to build a geothermal energy project in Northampton

Smith College has announced plans to build a geothermal energy project on its campus located in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA.

The US$210 million geothermal energy project will be equipped with electricity-fueled geothermal heating and cooling system, replacing the college’s 70-year-old, fuel-fired heating system. The project is being designed and constructed in partnership with Salas O'Brien and BOND Building. The construction of the project will be done in three phases, between 2022 and 2028.

Once completed, the geothermal energy system will reduce Smith College's campus carbon emissions by 90%, reduce water consumption by more than 10% and improve local air quality, as well as building comfort and lower operational costs for the college.
